ATELIER XI AWARDED THE THIRD PLACE IN THE DESIGN COMPETITION OF YUCAI PRIMARY SCHOOL

On May 29, 2024, the jury commitee announced final result of the "History and New Chapter: Architectural Design Competition for Five Schools in Nanshan, Shenzhen".

ATELIER XI was shortlisted among the top five entries from the 44 proposals that passed the first-stage pre-qualification, ultimately winning third prize in the Yucai Primary School Expansion and Renovation Design Competition after the final jury session.

Yucai Primary School, located in Shekou, Nanshan District, Shenzhen, was established in 1983 by the former China Merchants Shekou Industrial Zone, carrying significant historical memories of Shenzhen's reform and opening up. The expansion and renovation plan requires preserving existing buildings and trees while expanding the total building area of 56,100 square meters to accommodate 60 classes and 2,700 students.

The design concept by ATELIER XI centers around the "Academy" model of Yucai Primary School. Inspired by "Waves and Reefs," the campus space connects specialized classrooms with thematic courtyards and activity spaces, forming a three-dimensional, interwoven learning environment. The expansion design integrates existing buildings to create a series of courtyards while establishing a connected public space system with the urban park to the east.

ATELIER XI awarded the third place in the design competition of Houhai Primary School

July 12, 2023, the jury commitee announced the final result of the "Campus Urbanism of Six Schools" Design Competition in Nanshan, Shenzhen.

Among the 37 proposals in the first stage (pre-qualification), Atelier XI was selected as the top 5 to enter the second stage of the scheme design competition.

Finally, after the final evaluation by the academic committee (Gu Daqing, Liu Jiakun, Hua Li, Li Xinggang, Dong Gong, Wang Weiren, Gong Weimin), Atelier XI’s scheme was awarded the third place in the Houhai Primary School Reconstruction and Expansion Design Competition.

Houhai Primary School is located in Houhai Street, Nanshan District, Shenzhen. The reconstruction and expansion plan aims at adding 26,800 square meters of building area to the original school while renovating existing building of 4700 sqm, and eventually expands the original 24 classes to 36 classes.

The design concept of ATELIER XI hopes to maximize the use of the many trees surrounding the site and to build a fairyland for children learning and growing in the woods. Through the porous and permeable plan layout and the curvilinear corridor system, the various functional parts of the old and new buildings are connected. Facing the noisy traffic intersection, the building uses light and shadow and a series of side yards created between by metal mesh envelope and the building to eliminate traffic interference and establish visual interaction with the city. The library and gymnasium set up along the corner of the street on the ground floor will set up independent entrances to be shared with community residents, activating the city boundary and street life. The old teaching building will be preserved and be woven into the courtyard system of the new campus, presenting a dynamic dialogue between new and old, light and heavy.

ATELIER XI Wins Mahabodhi Temple Light Art Design Competition

Atelier Xi’s lighting design proposal for the inner sanctum of the Mahabodhi Temple

Siddhartha’s Intent India and Khyentse Foundation recently announced the winners of the international competition for the design of a light sculpture/light art installation in the outer and inner sanctums of the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya. The light sculpture/installation will be the final step in the Lighting the Mahabodhi project, initiated by Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche in 2019. The new installation will replace the existing chandeliers in the two sanctums.

The joint winners of the competition are Atelier Xi from China and Jyotir-Sangha from India. They were selected by a jury panel of artists, designers, and architects around the world.

Atelier Xi’s design represents a spatial mandala. A “layered lighting experience,” the design draws on the graded lighting of the temple’s exterior, leading progressively from cooler colours in the entryway to warmer tones when approaching the inner sanctum.

Jyotir-Sangha conceives of the outer hall as “the body” and the inner hall as “the mind.” Lit by two sets of luminaires, in their design the outer hall will feature an art installation called The Drape, celebrating the timeless Indian tradition of woven textiles and the uniquely Indian idea of the unstitched garment. The inner hall will feature artworks in gold-plated copper inspired by the Buddha’s ushnisha, up-lit from suspended central sources.

The final installation will draw on the richness of both design proposals, “aspiring to represent the vast spectrum of form and formlessness”, cited the Khyentse Foundation.

the Mahabodhi Temple

The Mahabodhi Temple, perhaps the most sacred of all pilgrimage sites for Buddhist practitioners, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that marks the place where the historical Buddha attained awakening. The first temple was built by Emperor Asoka in the 3rd century B.C., and the present temple dates back to the 5th or 6th century C.E. It is one of the earliest Buddhist temples built entirely of brick, still standing in India, from the late Gupta period.

Lighting the Mahabodhi

“Lighting the Mahabodhi” is perhaps the most ambitious Buddhist light offering ever undertaken. The objective of this sacred endeavor is to completely overhaul the temple complex’s aged lighting and electrical systems.

Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche’s vision is for modern design thought and creativity to be joined with this sacred space to create an art installation that has wide, youthful, and contemporary appeal while preserving the historical authenticity of this most sacred of sites.

Atelier XI shortlisted for Architectural Review Emerging Architecture awards

The Architectural Review has announced the shortlist for the AR Emerging awards 2022. Atelier XI was selected among the 16-strong practices including architects working on a range of projects across the world, from educational spaces in urban Europe and the Pacific islands to public spaces from Somaliland to Greece. Practices are experimenting with sustainable materials such as stone, bamboo and charred timber, and working with existing buildings, from a brutalist university in France to ruins in China.

First launched in 1999, the AR Emerging awards grant early recognition to young designers(under 45 yrs old) and celebrate the architectural stars of tomorrow. Since 2018, the awards have recognised a body of work rather than a single building, and aspiring candidates share a small portfolio of three projects: a completed building, a work in progress, and an idea. Previous winners of the Awards have included Shigeru Ban, Sou Fujimoto, Thomas Heatherwick, Bjarke Ingels, Sean Godsell, Jurgen Mayer H. , Frida Escobedo and Li Xiaodong.

The shortlisted practices will present their work to the AR Emerging Awards jury, which includes previous winners Carla Juaçaba and Rahul Mehrotra, at the World Architecture Festival in Lisbon in December, 2022.

Profiles of all this year’s shortlisted practices have been published in AR November 2022。
